The Autumn meeting of the “EFTBA was convened on the 24/11/09 and your recent announcement by the FEI that it has adopted a “Progressive List” of medications that are permissible for horses in competitions is of great concern. Our Association wishes to add its voice to the very substantial body of worldwide opinion, that is calling for the FEI to revisit its decision. It is in our view that this could prove to be a disastrously retrograde step for the health and welfare of all horses in competition.
It is, in our view, of the utmost importance for all horse sport that the enormous anxiety that this decision has caused, is resolved at the very earliest opportunity. We, like all of the other groups, and national and international organisations that have written to you, have grave concerns that horses competing whilst under treatment with pain-relieving medicines, are at an increased risk of musculoskeletal lesions progressing to catastrophic injuries.
It is contrary to our own and the public aspiration of drug-free competition.
We would strongly encourage an urgent international review of the evidence on which your decision was based and if necessary, further research before you proceed. It is in our view, imperative that you reconsider your position ,in the light of the worldwide reaction to your decision.
Yours sincerely
Joe Hernon
